The Difference Between Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

The thyroid is a gland located at the front of the neck. It typically has the size of a walnut, and it secretes thyroid hormone, which regulates your metabolism. The parathyroid glands are four  pea-sized glands located at the back of the thyroid. They also secrete a hormone, called the parathyroid hormone. Its job is to regulate calcium levels in the body.

Thyroid and Parathyroid Conditions

The NW ENT doctors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The most common condition associated with these glands is a hormonal imbalance. If your body produces too much or too little of either hormone, it will cause a series of complications. The treatment will depend on which gland is at fault, and whether the issue is an overactive gland (too much hormone) or underactive gland (too little hormone).

Parathyroid Hormone Imbalances

Hypothyroidism: This condition occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. Symptoms can include  fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression, dry skin, and heavy menstrual periods. Untreated hypothyroidism can lead to serious conditions like heart disease due to increased LDL cholesterol, peripheral neuropathy, and infertility.

Hyperparathyroidism: Overactivity of the parathyroid glands leads to excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This causes elevated blood calcium levels that can result in kidney stones, bone pain (due to bone resorption), fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues. Chronic high calcium levels may lead to osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems.

Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths within the thyroid gland. While most thyroid nodules are benign (noncancerous), a small percentage can be malignant (cancerous). Many benign nodules require no immediate treatment but should be monitored with regular follow-ups.

Benign nodules might require treatment or even removal if they cause a visible goiter, or if they are making it hard to breath or swallow. Malignant nodules are treated with surgical thyroid removal and may require follow-up treatment to deal with any residual thyroid tissue.

Your Options: Thyroid & Parathyroid Treatments

Thyroid and parathyroid conditions are relatively common. But many symptoms can be vague and overlap with other health issues, which makes diagnosis challenging. If you think your symptoms might be related to a thyroid or parathyroid surgical condition, book an appointment at Northwest ENT for an initial consultation. We have six locations in the Metro Atlanta area.

Our ENT doctors have the necessary experience, expertise and technology required to diagnose, treat and monitor disorders and conditions of the thyroid and parathyroid.
